UFC Sao Paulo will launch with an exciting lightweight battle between Ismael Bonfim, who turns 41 later this month, and veteran Vinc Pichel in their opening bout at UFC Sao Paulo.
Bonfim has started off his UFC career strong, earning two victories against Nariman Abbasov and Terrance McKinney, but losing in his latest fight against Benoit St. Denis back in July. Now he will face Pichel as part of Saturday night’s main event card.
Pichel will return to the UFC after an absence since April of 2022 when he lost by unanimous decision to Mark O. Madsen in their previous encounter. Pichel is an established professional fighter looking for redemption after this setback.
Pichel of FactoryX Muay Thai has displayed impressive striking ability throughout his career, collecting eight (TKO) victories. His latest win was against Austin Hubbard at UFC on ESPN 29 – Cannonier vs. Gastelum.
But his ground game truly distinguishes him as a threat in the UFC. At 40 years old, he has proven he can take opponents to the mat and score submission wins, as evidenced by his submission win over Gregor Gillespie on his record.
Pichel sees Bonfim’s bout as an ideal opportunity to demonstrate how effective his inside boxing techniques can be, given his below-average defense in the clinch. If he can exploit Bonfim’s weaknesses effectively, it could be an extended night for Bonfim’s debutant Brazilian opponent.
No matter the outcome of the rest of the card, this fight between two promising fighters, one with experience and another one at the beginning stages of their careers should not be missed.
