Joe Pyfer has done his part to push forward the UFC middleweight division with his impressive skill and power, pushing forward its progress through his performances at UFC Fight Night 229 at APEX Las Vegas on Saturday night as co-main event of the event. In what promises to be an intense event with plenty of fireworks and potential for both fighters to benefit by emerging victorious, Saturday’s co-main event promises fireworks too. Abdul Razak Alhassan is an explosive finisher and should make for an exciting co-main event between them.
Pyfer has proven his worth as an impressive striker since making his UFC debut with two wins under his belt and devastating knockouts in his two fights thus far. While still young in terms of experience and credentials, he appears to be on an upward path for success in the UFC.
Alhassan will face a challenging task of getting into range when throwing his bombs; to avoid being caught off-guard by big shots he must find ways to close in on him, perhaps adding more feints or feint-shooting maneuvers and increasing his ability to read his opponent.
Alhassan shares many similarities with Pyfer, yet has struggled to replicate his level of consistency in his fights. After an injury sidelined him for some time, Alhassan found success in the Contender Series after returning and is currently riding an eight-fight win streak including knockout victories over Gerald Meerschaert and Claudio Ribeiro sandwiched around an eventual defeat from Joaquin Buckley.
He’s an intimidating middleweight with some of the strongest hands in his division, yet can sometimes succumb to his own mistakes by getting out of position or missteps with footwork. If he can rectify those errors then perhaps we could see the next surprise at 185 pounds.
Pyfer has an advantage in this fight due to his superior grappling and striking accuracy. Ideally he should keep it on the ground where Alhassan can pick him apart easily; but if he gets taken down he may need to adjust his game plan as soon as he takes down Alhassan.
