Picks & Preview: Max Holloway vs Chang Sung Jung 08-26-2023

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Max “Blessed” Holloway is the division’s top contender and arguably the promotion’s best fighter overall. Holloway was the previous champion and made three successful title defenses until being defeated twice by Alexander Volkanovski. Since 2014, Blessed has gone 17-3 at 145 pounds, losing only to Volkanovaski and Dustin Poirier when the latter stepped up to lightweight for a championship opportunity.

During his 25 minute bouts, Blessed is recognized for his excellent movement and incredible volume. Holloway just came off a blowout victory in which he outstruck Arnold Allen by a score of 147 to 76, giving him a tremendous strike rate of 7.16 per minute.

After losing badly to Volkanovski in their title fight for the featherweight division 17 months ago, Chan Sung Jung has been out of action ever since. In that beating, Jung took 102 blows to the head, and despite his famed toughness, he was knocked out in the fourth round.

Jung, who took a long break from mixed martial arts to serve in the South Korean military, has a 4-3 record since his comeback to the cage in 2017. All three of his losses came at the hands of top-tier featherweights like Volkanovski, Brian Ortega, and Yair Rodriguez (in the latter bout he was on his way to a decision victory until being knocked out in the very last second).

The Korean Zombie has gained his moniker for his unflinching determination to advance and assault despite taking heavy casualties. While his boxing skills are well-known, his eight career submission victories are often overlooked.

KZ’s famed chin may not be able to withstand his hittable style, and he has taken a lot of damage over the course of his career, therefore this battle is being labeled as a probable retirement fight for him. Holloway has shown that he is, in fact, the best fighter in this division other than Volk by putting on striking clinics in recent years versus Allen, Rodriguez, and Calvin Kattar.
