The difficult assignment for Elves Brener (16-4) was to face Myktybek Orolbai, one of the rising talents in the lightweight class, where he lost his first UFC fight via hard-fought decision. When Brener faces the rising Joel Alvarez this weekend, he’ll be hoping to return to his winning ways. Since entering the Octagon and making his UFC debut by narrowly defeating Zubaira Tukhugov, Elves Brener has surpassed all expectations. He then proceeded to win two of his next three fights, destroying Guram Kuteteladze and Kaynan Kruschewsky with devastating knockouts. Though Brener nearly pulled off a stunning comeback in round three, his next fight versus Myktybek Orolbai, a rising prospect, was judged to be too much for him due to Orolbai’s superior grappling skills.
Joel Alvarez Analysis: First fight since 2022
In the second round of their bout, Joel Alvarez (20-3) most recently defeated Marc Diakiese with a stunning D’arce Choke. It will be Alvarez’s first bout in 13 months following a few fight postponements. In his upcoming fight against Elves Brener this weekend in Abu Dhabi, he hopes to improve his record to 5-2 in the UFC by scoring another finish. After dominating four straight fights, including a vicious standing TKO over Thiago Moises, Alvarez was beginning to establish himself as a legitimate contender. However, in the second round, he was defeated by Arman Tsarukyan, the current top contender, by ground and pound. Alvarez, though, is hoping to keep up his winning ways after returning to the victory column in his subsequent bout.
