Saturday’s UFC London card features a heavyweight fight between two contenders known for their ability to finish opponents quickly: fifth ranked Tom Aspinall takes on Marcin Tybura for what promises to be an explosive showdown, pitting Aspinall’s striking power against Tybura’s grappling expertise in what promises to be an instant classic contest.
Tom Aspinall last headlined a UFC event almost exactly one year ago when he suffered a knee injury during 15 seconds of his fight with Curtis Blaydes that ended the evening and kept him out for most of 2022. Since his return, local fans have eagerly anticipated seeing their favorite fighter back inside the octagon and Aspinall will hope to get back in contention for future title challenges with victory against Tybura.
Tybura in 31 professional fights, has held his own against top-tier Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specialists in the past. A prolific striker with solid hand speed, Tybura also demonstrated the ability to use his clinch game to take down opponents in past fights and possess excellent ground game, thrashing defense and submission defense capabilities.
Tybura has only managed to finish three of his opponents in his past four bouts, an issue he must address against Aspinall who will likely use his superior striking capabilities and strong wrestling base to exploit that weakness and exploit Tybura’s lack of finish power.
As such, Tybura would do well to open with a strong clinch game and prioritize takedown opportunities, in order to limit Aspinall’s opportunities to throw strikes while potentially ending it through late submission attempts later on in the fight.
Aspinall must control the pace of this fight in order to be successful against Tybura’s offensive pressure, using quick strikes and precise lateral movement in order to manage his pace effectively.
Aspinall will have to prove he has returned from his layoff and make a strong statement against Tybura if they hope to make any kind of impression at home in front of their own fans. Tybura may struggle to gain entry and may fade before the final rounds begin. This fight offers Aspinall an invaluable chance to show everyone he still belongs in the UFC.
