UFC 297 takes place this weekend in Toronto, Canada and featuring this middleweight fight between Marc-Andre Barriault (tough-and-tumble style) and Chris Curtis. Both fighters possess explosive knockout potential that should make for an entertaining fight that should produce explosive knockouts.
Marc-Andre Barriault although possessing excellent lateral movement and ground game abilities, he has not been able to get his offense flowing consistently against top-tier opponents. When confronting fighters with high work rates he tends to fall behind quickly and lose the striking battle; additionally he struggles when fighting opponents who vary their strike patterns outside his boxing range.
Barriault has shown improvement across his game in his last two fights, becoming more proficient with using footwork and switching up attacks when on offense. Unfortunately, though, he still lacks speed and power to beat top middleweights like Curtis.
Curtis is blessed with tremendous power and work rate, yet has struggled to finish his opponents in recent fights. To become more efficient with his strikes and reduce mistakes in the corner. Additionally, his defense should improve when up against opponents with superior boxing or grappling skills.
Chris Curtis, is 36 years old and from Cincinnati. Curtis is an accomplished veteran with numerous fights under his belt but a struggle finding consistent success at middleweight.
His last loss was a controversial no contest against Nassourdine Imavov and before that a very difficult decision defeat against Kelvin Gastelum.
He will look to turn this loss around by producing an outstanding performance against Barriault.
Curtis stands out as having superior work rates and durability; his eye for defense and better body control should allow him to outwork Barriault in this brawl.
Barriault has tremendous strength and ruggedness but doesn’t possess enough speed or power to be an overwhelming force in the middleweight division. His best chance of victory lies in staying away from being hit and using his size and strength to his advantage; likely starting off slow until landing one big blow and scoring with it.
