In 2020, Tafon “Da Don” Nchukwi, 28, won Dana White’s Contender Series, bringing his professional record to 6-3. Nchuwki has won twice, both times by decision. His last two fights ended in knockout losses. AJ Dobson, also 31, has a 6-2 record in the pros but not much else to show for it. Even though he has lost his last two fights, both were decided against him.
Nchukwi’s performances vary widely despite his lack of experience. Nchukwi landed with reasonable speed and power the first two times he faced a pure striker, and he fought on his front foot effectively.
Nchukwi’s output dropped significantly in his last two bouts against primary strikers, and he fought from the back foot as a counter striker, hoping to land a single powershot rather than combos. “Da Don” was defeated by knockout in both of those bouts.
When Nchukwi fights tentatively, his opponent is more likely to charge him and deal genuine damage because of his lack of output and defensive abilities. He works considerably better on the hammer side of things than the nail side. As the aggressor, however, he has proven to be a formidable boxer throughout the course of all three rounds.
Despite demonstrating versatility, Dobson has lost both of his UFC bouts. Dobson’s first opponent, a cardio heavy and gritty fighter with significant experience, routinely outstruck and outgrappled Dobson. Dobson was again outstruck in his second bout, although he was successful with his aggressive wrestling. Dobson’s failures came down to his inability to throw volume, which he demonstrated in both situations.
Dobson’s inclination to fight quietly gives his opponent the upper hand in the cage. Dobson has not demonstrated any consistency in his short career in combining his striking and wrestling. However, there are times during battles when he appears very deadly and explosive. His inherent agility and strength as a wrestler allow him to land with force.
