Fight Preview
On Saturday, September 2, UFC Fight Night will feature Ciryl Gane vs. Sergey Spivak as the headline event. This matchup between two heavyweights ranked in the top ten should be exciting to watch, as both Gane and Spivak are aiming to extend their respective winning streaks to four bouts.
Ten fights into his mixed martial arts career, Ciryl Gane has already won seven in a row inside the ring. That got him a fight at Francis Ngannou for the heavyweight belt last summer, but he lost by decision. Despite Ngannou’s reputation as a one-dimensional power-puncher, Gane held a 63-43 advantage in major strikes during the match, but was brought down four times and controlled for more than eight minutes on the mat.
After bouncing back from that setback with a knockout win over Tai Tuivasa, he finally earned another opportunity at the title, but this time Jon Jones submitted him in just two minutes.
Even though Gane had success in kickboxing and Muay Thai before transitioning to MMA, he needs to work on his defensive wrestling if he wants to win a UFC title. But he’s a physical marvel, with the division’s best lateral movement and striking technique.
Sergey Spivak is now the seventh-ranked heavyweight contender and is fresh off a Performance of the Night bonus for his first-round submission win against Derrick Lewis in February. Aside from his loss against the current No. 4 contender Tom Aspinall, the “Polar Bear” is 6-1 in his previous seven UFC battles.
Spivak is a versatile heavyweight who has scored an impressive 15 takedowns in his last three fights while logging less than 14 minutes of total battle time. The 28-year-old thrives in close quarters and on the mat, where his grappling skills help him secure submissions or ground-and-pound victories.
