Alex Morono vs Joaquin Buckley features two welterweights who possess both power and style in their fighting styles, promising an action-packed bout.
After an outstanding response to having his 4-fight winning run broken, Alex Morono makes a comeback. At UFC 282, he fought Santiago Ponzinibbio, who TKO’d him in the 3rd round to end his surge. He made a comeback in May to face the cunning seasoned Tim Means, and in the 2nd round, Means was submitted to improve to 12-5 overall in the UFC.
Morono has put together an impressive 23-8 record since joining the UFC. As a product of Fortis MMA, Morono boasts both an impressive Jiu-jitsu base and boxer’s hands, making him very effective inside of an octagon environment; winning five out of six fights over that span with only Santiago Ponzinibbio defeating him and one submission victory against Tim Means. Morono’s skill set will make all of the difference here. As an KO artist, Morono boasts an outstanding significant strike rate and more accurate power shots, along with seven submissions under his belt to bring down a fight if necessary.
He now faces Joaquin Buckley, who also just finished a fight brilliantly in the 2nd round. In his previous 2 fights, he had been defeated by Christ Curtis and Nassourdine Imavov, both by unanimous decision. He eventually dropped to welterweight though, and in 2023 knocked out Andre Fialho with a head kick to open his welterweight era. Buckley is an explosive puncher and capable of knocking someone out with his left hand, but his striking accuracy falls short in this fight. Only 42% of significant strikes landed during his career were considered significant hits while landing straight punches was even less successful.
Being so dependent on his hands might be the cause of Morono’s collapse. He has been a strong striker, but if he chooses to stand over 3 rounds, Buckley will have no other chance to win. Despite this, Morono is more skilled on his feet and is more likely to keep the battle standing. He will be prepared to repel Buckley’s powerful assaults. He is just the superior fighter and has greater chances for success. That being said, particularly at welterweight, you cannot write out Buckley facing a fighter who has previously been knocked out multiple times.
