Fight Preview

Despite a late switch in opponents, rising star Ian Garry will make his long-awaited return this weekend at UFC 292. Now, for the first time in the UFC, he will be going up against an experienced opponent in the form of Neil Magny, a perennial contender. He has a 60% finish rate since entering the UFC, and his most recent victory was a knockout against the ever-vigilant Daniel Rodriguez.

Besides entering this fight on short notice, Magny is fresh off an intriguing, though controversial, victory against Phillip Rowe in late June. Both men have a lot to gain from this fight; Garry will be facing his first true veteran in Magny, and Magny can use Garry as a stepping stone back into the welterweight top 10 with a victory over Garry.

Ian Garry combines precise kickboxing with fascinating clinch skills to create a unique fighting style. Using his long reach to keep his distance and land clean shots, his striking skill is on full display in his ability to create openings with precise combinations. Instead of relying on blind aggression, Garry picks his opportunities to strike, allowing him to then follow up with devastating counters and evasive plays.

When Garry’s game moves to the ground, though, it takes on a whole new level of intrigue. His accomplishments in Cage Warriors demonstrated his skill at ground-and-pound and controlling the fight from behind. Magny may be caught off guard by his grappling prowess despite the fact that he has spent the majority of his UFC career fighting on his feet.

Pressure, cage control, and tactical wrestling are the cornerstones of Neil Magny’s fighting style. While Magny’s striking lacks the flair of some of his competitors, it serves to set up his grappling and clinch work to great advantage. By forcing his opponents into the fence, he can engage in clinch exchanges and wear them down. Magny’s reach advantage in the clinch allows him to throw knee strikes and maintain control, often tiring out his opponents.
