The UFC returns to Las Vegas this Saturday evening for Fight Night with an explosive five-round lightweight main event between rising contender Grant Dawson and battle-tested veteran Bobby Green at Apex facility. Dawson currently boasts an unbeaten 12-fight streak while Green aims to enter into top 15 rankings for lightweights.
Although both Dawson and Green enter this fight with winning records, there are certain key distinctions that could give Dawson an edge in this fight. Both athletes stand 5-foot-10 but Dawson boasts an inch advantage in reach as well as being 8 years younger.
At such a young age, Dawson has already shown an uncanny knack for early finishing of fights. Out of 12 wins in the UFC to date, eight have come through quick finishes; six of those victories came via first round wins alone. A skilled grappler adept at taking down opponents quickly, his ground-and-pound style makes him one of the most dangerous fighters within his division.
Green has recently struggled to beat opponents of Dawson’s caliber and lost on points to Islam Makhachev and Drew Dober before being choked out by Rafael Fiziev. Still, Green remains a thrilling competitor with lots of experience in the cage, and his win against Ferguson gave him much-needed momentum going into this bout.
Green may be an accomplished defensive grappler, but he’s rarely faced someone of Dawson’s caliber before. That poses a substantial problem in this fight as Dawson is an extremely skilled wrestler capable of getting opponents down quickly – 3.70 rounds every 15 minutes on average and stuffing them on 40% of opportunities if Green can’t avoid his takedown attempts from Dawson quickly enough or else face potential submission from him.
This fight should be entertaining between two talented fighters, but experience will likely play a critical role. If Dawson can keep up his energy for all five rounds and claim victory he could move closer to title contention in the lightweight division; but if he runs out of gas midfight Green could capitalize on that and end it early through late stoppage.
