Norma Dumont returns to the UFC octagon this weekend in search of four straight wins, taking on up-and-coming prospect Chelsea Chandler who recently made a positive first impression during her UFC debut. Their bout will take place during Saturday’s UFC Apex event in Las Vegas.
Dumont quickly established her place in the women’s featherweight division despite an initial losing record with some impressive performances in Sanda competitions. This Brazilian specialist notched wins over Karol Rosa, Aspen Ladd and Felicia Spencer while in her time with Sanda Promotion. Her most recent victory came against Rosa via unanimous decision victory.
Dumont believes she is the perfect candidate to help resuscitate the featherweight division following Amanda Nunes’ retirement, and hopes she remains at her current weight class or makes the switch to bantamweight later. In any event, Dumont remains focused on winning as she strives for a top five position within UFC featherweight competition.
Dumont stands a good chance at taking down Chandler, due to her superior striking and takedown defense stats. At 32 years old, Dumont is considered an early favorite in this fight; Chandler may possess talent but she has yet to demonstrate that she can compete with top fighters in her division.
Chandler excels at fighting on the ground, and she displayed this ability during her debut against Julija Stoliarenko. An American, Chandler can strike hard while also scoring submission victories. She trains at Cesar Gracie’s gym in Stockton with the Diaz brothers and has plenty of grappling experience under her belt.
Chandler may be an effective striker herself, but she will have difficulty matching Norma Dumont’s speed and power in the early rounds of their bout this Saturday. Chandler can take advantage of Dumont’s height advantage by using kickboxing techniques; kickoffs could potentially open up opportunities to takedown. It is expected that Dumont will land early takedowns to earn points on the ground.
