UFC 291’s pay-per-view card will feature one of the more intriguing fights this Saturday (July 29), in Salt Lake City, Utah: an ex-UFC interim champion Tony Ferguson will go up against longtime divisional mainstay Bobby Green. Tony Ferguson has a record of 26-8 overall and a 15-6 record in the illustrious UFC. Ferguson is looking to end his five-fight losing streak against Green. Ferguson, once considered one of the top lightweights worldwide, is popular with his home state fans and returning could give him an additional surge of energy and enthusiasm.
Bobby Green has a career record of 29-14-1 and a 10-9-1-1 record in the UFC. Green is an experienced striker and far superior wrestler than Ferguson, so he may opt to avoid engaging in grappling and focus instead on working his way inside where his advantage lies. Green’s combination of quickness, head movement and head tucks makes him difficult to hit with straight punches.
Green has one of the more underrated fighters in his division and consistently scores clean jabs and combinations using stabbing teep kicks to manage distance and keep opponents at a safe distance. He can use stabbing teep kicks as another means of distance control.
Green was successful in winning most rounds against Jared Gordon during their most recent fight, looking very confident during the final frame. If he can replicate such performance again with another impressive showing, this should help earn him an opportunity at the title shot.
Both fighters have experienced some recent difficulties, leading some bettors to wonder whether Green should remain such an overwhelming betting favorite. Yet even with his struggles, Green remains a skilled competitor capable of fighting at an elite level for extended periods.
