Preview & Picks: Fernando Padilla vs Kyle Nelson 09-17-2023

Game Preview

Fight Preview

UFC newcomer Fernando Padilla, at age 26, defeated UFC veteran and journeyman Julian Erosa in their first bout. Padilla has won 13 of his 15 fights via knockout and lost only four times by decision. He faces up against Kyle “The Monster” Nelson, another aggressive fighter. Nelson, who is 32 years old, won a decision in June to get back on the winning track.

The significance of Padilla’s battle with and victory over Erosa goes beyond simply defeating a UFC veteran. Padilla and Erosa are both skilled fighters with comparable fighting styles, but Padilla has shown that he is more agile and deadly. Padilla is not scared of getting into a firefight and usually sets a fast pace right from the start of a bout.

Padilla threw 29 big strikes, landing 20 of them in the short :80 round. Padilla has a rather tall and long build for the division, but he typically forgoes his reach advantage in favor of a more traditional in-the-pocket brawl. He charges straight ahead, uses his chin as a shield, and unleashes powerful hooks in the pocket.

Padilla keeps his head in the center and can be tagged going in, but he usually comes out on top in 50/50 exchanges thanks to his strong chin and natural power. Padilla isn’t just a good fighter on his feet; he also has a formidable submission game.

His wrestling is fundamental, with a focus on clubbing and submitting. If he manages to knock someone out, he can rapidly pounce on them and force a submission. His pre-UFC fights show that he can keep up with a higher-paced battle for three rounds, which is something we haven’t seen tried in the UFC yet.

Like Padilla, Nelson is a fighter who looks for the knockout at every opportunity. Nelson is typically the shorter fighter, in contrast to Padilla, who has a height and reach advantage over several of his opponents. Nelson had to use upward strikes because he is typically smaller than his opponents.

Depending on which side of the chicken-or-egg debate you’re on, his massive overhand strikes have either caused or profited from this situation. Nelson has a penchant for leading with his hip, swinging wildly, and striking with an aggressive intent.
