Fight Preview
Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will meet for the second time, in what should be an incredible fight. Both men are all-action fighters who never disappoint when entering the ring; their first encounter ended with Poirier earning a fourth round TKO victory, leading to this second clash taking place on Saturday, July 29th card in Salt Lake City for the main event of UFC 291.
Gaethje is currently 15-3-1, having lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira during title defenses. However, Gaethje remains one of the most exciting fighters in MMA and could become UFC lightweight champion with an outstanding showing this weekend.
Only a single spot above Gaethje, Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier (25-2) serves as the second-ranked lightweight contender. He has won four of his previous five bouts by submission, including a third-round triumph over Michael Chandler in November. Poirier has been an exemplary UFC fighter since entering, and will aim to extend that streak in the main event against Gaethje.
Both fighters possess impressive offensive power in the octagon, yet also possess solid defense and recoverability, making this matchup potentially long and back-and-forth for all three rounds of fights and possibly up to 15 minutes of competition.
As both opponents possess similar styles, their fight could turn into a tactical war of footwork with takedown attempts thrown in for good measure. Poirier holds the edge in leg kicks and his ability to land high-percentage strikes against Gaethje when caught off guard; an Irishman’s best hope of closing distance may lie in forcing Gaethje to close to cage where he can use his superior wrestling abilities against Gaethje’s wild combinations.
Gaethje is the superior striking specialist, but not as well-rounded in his overall game as Poirier. Gaethje relies too heavily on goonish tactics to win fights; something Poirier easily countered through being at his peak performance level.
