Payton Talbott is one of the most intriguing prospects in mixed martial arts and makes his UFC debut this Saturday night against Nick Aguirre. Talbott is currently the favorite in this fight despite Aguirre having been around longer and being undefeated in combat sports.
Talbott earned his UFC spot through winning Dana White Contender Series, making an outstanding debut against Reyes Cortez Jr via unanimous decision in August. With height and reach advantages combined with switch stance and striking abilities that make him exciting to watch, he quickly rose through the ranks of UFC contender series to join Reyes Cortez Jr in defeat.
The 25-year old boasts an effective boxing style with clean punches and powerful blows, capable of knocking opponents out quickly with quick strikes like his uppercut. Additionally, he is an impressive wrestler, having successfully blocked 16 takedown attempts during his DWCS fight and boasting an outstanding strike rate per minute (9.567 with 51% striking accuracy), striking strike rate per minute (9.67) with only 5.07 significant strikes landing per fight and mitigating damage with his impressive Strike Absorbed per Minute rate (4.9).
Aguirre’s striking and wrestling skills combine nicely, but his best performances come when he can close the distance and exchange blows with his opponent. An aggressive fighter with high volume striking techniques that keeps fights moving forward. His submission game is strong as well, although not great at being executed in close quarters.
Aguirre was most recently defeated by Dan Argueta through unanimous decision, although his career boasts an amazing knockout percentage and submission average of 1.6 in his fights. Additionally, Aguirre has an outstanding takedown defense system which only permits one attempt every 15 minutes from an opponent.
This matchup should prove exciting as Talbott could emerge as a top bantamweight contender while Aguirre has plenty of experience and could make his own move up the rankings. Aguirre is known for his strong striking, though his height and reach disadvantages may make this fight tough for him; by utilizing grappling more, Aguirre may be able to slow Talbott down over three rounds for victory.
