Fight Preview
This Saturday’s main event at UFC Fight Night is between Vicente Luque and Rafael Dos Anjos. The No. 10-ranked welterweight Luque is looking to end a two-fight losing streak against the highly experienced veteran Dos Anjos.
Vicente “The Silent Assassin” Silveira, in August of last year, Luque was defeated by Geoff Neal. In the fight, he took 121 punches, including two knockdowns, and was eventually starched in the third round.
For his second defeat, despite having an 84-60 advantage in major strikes, Luque lost the fight to Belal Muhammed after being put down five times and being controlled on the mat for more than seven minutes.
Before this losing streak, Luque had won four straight bouts and three Performance of the Night bonuses. Luque is a brutal fighter who enjoys a good scrap and uses a potent combination of powerful boxing and ferocious strength. He also possesses solid grappling skills, as seen by his BJJ black belt and eight career submission victories.
In December of last year, Rafael Dos Anjos submitted Bryan Barbarena in the second round of their fight. Dos Anjos, a former lightweight champion, made the jump to welterweight in 2017, but his 4-4 record there led to his decision to return to the lightweight category.
He had previously won two decisions at lightweight but was knocked out by Rafael Fiziev last summer, prompting him to return to welterweight for his Barbarena bout. RDA mixes heavy striking with good wrestling and advanced BJJ skills, making him a well-rounded and technically proficient competitor.
Although he is a technically proficient fighter, Dos Anjos has struggled at welterweight against opponents who have greater strength, speed, and agility. Luque has a six-inch reach advantage over RDA and is larger, stronger, and younger than his opponent.
However, the brain hemorrhage Luque sustained in his prior combat with Neal has a lot of people worried. Even if he is given the all-clear by physicians, he may find himself modifying the aggressive approach that led to his success after suffering an injury like that.
