On Saturday, Heidenheim will host Hoffenheim in the club’s first ever Bundesliga home game. Meanwhile, the visitors will be trying to get back on track after losing the season opener to Freiburg by a score of 2-1.
Heidenheim scored two goals in injury time on the final day of the previous season to earn promotion as champions, but they lost their Bundesliga opener on the road against Wolfsburg by a score of 2-0. Jonas Wind’s early brace for the Wolves caught Frank Schmidt’s team off guard. The Danish striker scored the game-winner in the sixth minute and added an insurance goal just over 20 minutes later.
Heidenheim responded positively for a club that had never played at this level before, holding the ball for longer than Niko Kovac’s squad and creating more chances (14) and corners (7) than their opponents. Schmidt, though, will be mindful of the fact that his team only forced Koen Casteels, the opponent’s goalkeeper, to make one save, and he will be expecting for much more penetration at Voith-Arena on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Pellegrino Matarazzo‘s Hoffenheim team suffered a disheartening 2-1 loss at home to Freiburg to kick off the season. Attila Szalai, who was brought in from Fenerbahce over the summer in an effort to shore up their defense, got off to a bad start in Germany by giving Freiburg the lead with an own goal only six minutes before halftime.
Hungarian teammate Roland Sallai doubled the visitors’ lead on the stroke of halftime, but former Liverpool defender Ozan Kabak cut the deficit to two five minutes into the second half, sparking hopes of a comeback. Die Kraichgauer had 22 shots, but they were unable to get the equalizer. If they don’t win in Heidenheim this weekend, they’ll be worried about being in another relegation battle, but they won’t panic just yet because they finished 23 points behind Freiburg last season.
