In the Bundesliga match between Borussia Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen on Friday night, both teams will be looking to avenge recent losses. Last time out, Gladbach was defeated 3-0 by RB Leipzig while Werder Bremen was defeated 3-2 by Bayer Leverkusen.
Daniel Farke’s Gladbach team continued to struggle on the road as Leipzig absolutely outclassed their opponents in the match at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday. To be fair to Die Fohlen, they managed to contain their rivals until Timo Werner broke the score two minutes before the hour mark. Emil Forsberg’s penalty and a late goal from Josko Gvardiol gave Die Roten Bullen a well-deserved victory, though.
The fact that Farke’s team only had 33% of the ball for the duration of the game may worry him because, as the previous manager of Norwich City, he prides himself on employing a disciplined passing style of play. With only one victory on the road all year, Gladbach will undoubtedly be happy to play Werder Bremen at home on Friday. Gladbach has won seven of their 12 Bundesliga games at Borussia Park so far this season.
In contrast, Werder Bremen lost to Bayer Leverkusen for the fourth time in their previous five games as Ole Werner’s team was unable to get a late equalizer. In Weserstadion, Marvin Ducksch had given the hosts the lead after 30 minutes. But, Xabi Alonso’s team responded with three goals each side of the halftime, with Adam Hlozek’s goal in the 83rd minute effectively ending the game despite Niclas Fullkrug’s late penalty kick.
The fact that Werner and his team have a 10-point lead over the bottom two spots means they won’t have to worry about dropping right back down, and their strong start to the season means their stay in the top division won’t be short-lived either. The 34-year-old will be motivated to get his team back on track as soon as possible, maybe beginning with their trip to Monchengladbach on Friday, as a top-half finish is still very much in reach.
