Nearing the midway point of their first Bundesliga season, Heidenheim could hardly have asked for a more favorable outcome. They are 10 points ahead of danger going into the match on Saturday as they have twice as many points as Mainz 05, Koln, and SV Darmstadt 98 combined, all of whom are in the drop zone. Given their stellar play leading up to the break, head coach Frank Schmidt and his team may have been devastated by the timing of the recent winter vacation. Heidenheim moved up to the 9th spot, surpassing Wolfsburg, with victories over Darmstadt, Mainz, and Freiburg. Only the top 7 clubs in addition to Borussia Monchengladbach have registered more goals than Schmidt’s squad this season, despite their far from impenetrable defense. Because of this, they’ve become one of the division’s most entertaining teams to watch, especially considering how frequently they handily defeat some of Germany’s top clubs.
With only two victories in their first 16 league matches this year, Koln’s decision to split from Steffen Baumgart over the most recent winter break may not have come as a huge surprise. Union Berlin and Freiburg two games in a row proved to be the last straw for the club’s management. Baumgart was given more time than he may have had otherwise by two excellent seasons, so Timo Schultz, his replacement, must take immediate advantage of the opportunity. The 46-year-old has coached Basel and St. Pauli in the past, although he left the latter after just 12 games due to a dismal start to his tenure earlier this season. In that sense, the Billy Goats’ selection is undoubtedly bold, but it’s evident that they saw something in Schultz’s early managerial years that could help him fit in well with the team. It is obvious where Schultz has to focus his improving efforts after the squad has managed just 10 goals this season, 3 less than any other squad in the division.
