Freiburg Analysis: Europe dreams still alive.
Even if they defeated Lens in the Europa League following extra time the week before, Freiburg has been terrible at home. Following a 2-1 loss at Augsburg the previous game, Christian Streich’s team has only managed one point out of a potential 15, dropping them to 9th place. Due to their respective victories against Freiburg last weekend, Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim now sit 5 points ahead of sixth-place Eintracht Frankfurt. It makes sense that Freiburg is focused on their European run; they gave their fans an unforgettable evening against Lens a little over a week ago. In addition, they have a decent home record this season, having lost only two games at Europa-Park within the league. However, Streich’s team needs more victories, and this could be another noteworthy one, if they hope to qualify for Europe straight away once more.
Bayern Analysis: Needs to win to put pressure on Leverkusen
With a late victory over RB Leipzig last weekend, Bayern ended their miserable three-game losing streak, only days after revealing that Thomas Tuchel, their coach, will step down at the conclusion of the campaign. Although Bayern closed the gap by winning the rematch against Mainz on Friday, there is a growing feeling that Bayern’s dominant streak may be approaching a stop. Heading into the Leipzig match, Bayern was 11 points behind Bayer Leverkusen, who had already defeated Mainz in the Friday encounter. The Bavarians will have the opportunity to put pressure on Leverkusen this weekend, though, as they will play first on Friday and welcome Lazio on Tuesday. If Bayern wants to rescue what has been a terrible season by their criteria, they will realistically need to win every match across both competitions for the remainder of the season, and even that could fail to be enough to keep the Bundesliga crown.
