This weekend, the spotlight in the Bundesliga will be on the massive matchup between RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich at Red Bull Arena on Saturday. Both teams advanced to the second round of the DFB-Pokal this week, and now they return to league play separated by just one point.
On Wednesday, 20-year-old sensation Benjamin Sesko helped lead RB Leipzig to a 3-2 victory over second-division team Wehen Wiesbaden in a hard-fought DFB-Pokal first-round match. Sesko now has five goals in seven games for his new club.
The Red Bulls had won six straight games overall, including four straight in the Bundesliga and a Champions League win against Young Boys before Wednesday’s cup victory.
Marco Rose’s squad started the Bundesliga season with a 3-2 loss to Bayer Leverkusen after beating Bayern Munich 3-0 in the DFL-Supercup, but they quickly got back on track with a 5-1 thrashing of Stuttgart and subsequent wins over Union Berlin, Augsburg, and Borussia Monchengladbach.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, dominated their midweek match against Preussen Munster, 4-0, with 72% possession and 26 shots, while allowing only three chances on goal.
Harry Kane scored his first hat trick for the club and now has eight goals in seven games this season after helping the Bavarians to a 7-0 victory over VfL Bochum last weekend. The Bavarians opened their Champions League campaign with a 4-3 victory over Manchester United.
Although Thomas Tuchel’s squad will always regret losing 3-0 to Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup, the defending champions have been on a roll recently, winning 13 of 15 league games and cruising to victories in the Champions League and DFB-Pokal.
Die Roten will be confident in defending their crown after winning each of the past 11 Bundesliga titles. Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, and Borussia Dortmund are all within two points of Bayern after five matches.
