This weekend marks the return of the Bundesliga with a new slate of games. On Sunday, VfB Stuttgart takes on Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen team in a crucial match at the MHP Arena.

Nobody could have predicted Stuttgart’s challenge to secure a Champions League qualification slot this season, given that the team only avoided relegation by defeating Hamburger SV in a two-leg play-off at the end of the previous season. But under Sebastian Hoeness’s leadership, they have significantly improved to be in just that position. Since taking over as Stuttgart’s coach in early April, the former Hoffenheim manager has won 19 of his 28 games in charge. Initially, he managed Stuttgart to stay out of the automatic drop zone. They have no such worries for this season. Stuttgart will actually match their season-long point total in 20 fewer games if they can defy the odds and hand Leverkusen their first loss of the year on Sunday. That provides an amazing overview of their startling improvement in the last few months.
