Marseille can start their semi-final match against Atalanta at the Orange Velodrome with a strong start after being defeated by Benfica on penalties in the quarterfinal last month. The French team’s domestic season has been poor, but this Orange Velodrome has provided some bright spots. They have only dropped a single game at home this season, and that was against PSG, the Ligue 1 winners. In the Europa League, they have triumphed over teams like Ajax, Shakhtar, Villarreal, and Benfica. Marseille may be able to welcome back a few players despite having a big injury list. Early May is when Chancel Mbemba, Ismaila Sarr, and Valentin Rongier are expected to return, although it’s unclear if this game comes too soon. Quentin Merlin’s recuperation is still progressing slowly.
Atalanta Analysis: Currently on a 3-game winning run
Atalanta has won three, drawn one, and lost one of their past five games. Though they progressed in Europe and maintained their league unblemished record, the Italians have had a mixed run of results. This run started at home against Verona in a 2-2 league draw. Gianluca Scamacca and Ederson’s scores gave them a 2-0 lead after just eighteen minutes, therefore it was disappointing to lose. Verona tied the score with two goals in the final four minutes of the second half, and they were awarded a point. They then suffered their lone loss of the time, which eventually helped them advance to the Europa League semi finals.
