The 2023-24 La Liga season is back in action this week, starting on Friday when Ernesto Valverde’s stellar Athletic Bilbao team takes on Celta Vigo in a crucial match at the San Mames.
Celta Vigo has had difficulty making an impression during the current campaign and is presently in 18th position in the standings for La Liga. The Galician team will want to step it up in this encounter after holding Sevilla to a respectable 1-1 draw the previous week. Conversely, Athletic Bilbao has risen to the occasion this season and currently sit in 5th position in the league standings. Celta’s first La Liga victory of the season came against Almeria on the road at the beginning of September, but they defeated Turegano 4-0 to secure a next round fixture in the Copa del Rey at the beginning of the month. The Sky Blues haven’t competed outside of Spain’s first division since the 2011–12 season, and given the caliber of their manager, it would be shocking to see them drop this year. Celta has really defeated Athletic 2-1 in their La Liga matchup at San Mames this season, despite the fact that they have prevailed in a pair of the previous three encounters between the two teams.
