Athletic Bilbao will host Real Madrid for Matchday 1 of the 2023/2024 LaLiga season on Saturday, August 12 at San Mamés.
Athletic Bilbao finished eighth the previous campaign, just missing being denied a European departure. However, being unable to take part in any matches for European competition will relieve them of a tremendous weight and enable them to focus solely on their La Liga encounters. Sadly for Bilbao, their defense suffered when experienced first-team player Igo Martnez left on a free transfer to Barcelona. Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta was acquired by Athletic during the summer on a free transfer from Mallorca, and Javier Marton joined them from Real Sociedad. However, despite rumors about their futures, the squad has been able to hold onto players like Inaki and Nico Williams, and Ernesto Valverde’s team will once again aim towards a European position in the upcoming campaign.
Real Madrid had a dismal season by the club’s ambitious standards, losing to Manchester City in the Champions League’s semi-final and ending ten points below their biggest adversaries Barcelona in La Liga. They still managed to win the European Super Cup, the Club World Cup and the Copa del Rey, but Los Blancos are now driven to keep the season’s most significant trophies this time around. In the transfer window, Real brought in Jude Bellingham, Fran Garcia, Joselu and Arda Guler, two outstanding young players. Whilst Guler is laying the groundwork for the years to come, Bellingham has already become a star. However, the team lost valuable attacking resources when Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema both exited on free deals to PSG and the Saudi Pro League respectively. Also Brahim Diaz, who enjoyed a wonderful loan season at AC Milan, is back for Los Merengues and will be hoping for more regular game time with Real Madrid this time around.
