Picks & Predictions: Valencia vs Las Palmas 8/18/2023

Game Preview

Game Preview

When Valencia hosts Las Palmas at Mestalla on Friday, they’ll be looking to make it two wins in a row to start the 2023–24 La Liga season. Las Palmas made their return to this level of football with a 1-1 draw against Mallorca, while Los Che enter the match on the heels of an excellent 2-1 triumph against Sevilla at Estadio Ramon.

Valencia have a highly strong crop of young players, and there’s no doubt they got a big boost of confidence from last Friday’s great 2-1 triumph at Sevilla, when 20-year-old substitute Javi Guerra scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute.

Only Cenk Ozkacar and Pepelu have joined Ruben Baraja’s squad this summer, while key players like Yunus Musah, Jorge Saenz, Edinson Cavani, and Toni Lato have left the club. Considering their current situation, a La Liga season in which they finish in the top half would be considered a triumph, and they will be looking to improve on their away performance in 2023–24, when they won just 13 points in 19 games away from home.

Meanwhile, Las Palmas come into this match after a 1-1 draw against Mallorca on Saturday. Jonathan Viera scored the game-winning goal for Las Palmas from the penalty spot in the 29th minute, but Mallorca equalized through Antonio Raillo in the 70th minute. After five seasons in the Segunda Division, La Union Deportiva earned promotion to La Liga by finishing second in the 2017–18 season.

So, finishing higher than 18th this season would be considered a win, and it would be interesting to see how the squad does this term under highly regarded head coach Garcia Pimienta. This summer, Las Palmas signed eight new players, including Sandro Ramirez and Munir El Haddadi, and released many others, including Wilfrid Kaptoum and Florin Andone.
