That came after Madrid destroyed Girona, a team vying for the title, 4-0 at the Bernabeu last weekend despite playing without both their first-choice goalkeeper and all four of their first-choice center backs. That didn’t matter, though, since they clearly found a way and, going into this weekend’s games, have opened up a five-point lead at the top of the table.
