Before the international break, Celta Vigo won their first league game of the season, propelling them to the upper echelons of their league. They moved up to 13th after the victory and have a chance to move even higher this weekend if they can win in front of their home fans against Mallorca.
Celta made a dismal start to the new season, going winless in their first three games. Before the international break, though, they secured three points for the first time this season with a thrilling triumph over Almeria. Celta scored twice in the first 33 minutes, but when Almeria responded twice in the span of 16 second-half minutes, they needed a late winner from Willot Swedberg to secure the victory.
After four losses in a row to start the season, Mallorca is likely on high alert. As a result, they have dropped to position 17 in La Liga. then started the season with two draws, and then broke a two-game losing streak right before the international break with another tie.
Mallorca fought hard and held Athletic Bilbao to a scoreless draw by stoutly defending. Mallorca only held 33% of the ball and never looked like winning that match. Only two of their shots were successful. Before the international break, they finally gained the point they needed to snap their losing streak.
Four of Mallorca’s last seven wins against Celta Vigo have come in this matchup, making them a solid favorite. Celta have only managed one victory in that time frame. Mallorca won the corresponding matchup 1-0 in April of the previous season.
This weekend, Mallorca’s impressive history in this matchup warrants a great deal of respect. They’ve gotten off to a slow start to the new season, but they might be in a good position to break through by the fifth try.
