Real Madrid will travel to a hot Girona team on Saturday hoping to add to their current 21 points. Los Blancos will be coming into the encounter after a 2-0 win over Las Palmas on Wednesday, while Girona continued their hot streak with a 2-1 win over Villarreal on the same night.
Girona is only in their fourth season of playing in Spain’s premier division, thus their current lead in the standings after seven games is all the more impressive.
Girona has gotten off to a fantastic start this season in the Catalan league, with six victories and one draw in their first seven games. If Barcelona beats Sevilla on Friday, they will regain the top spot in the standings.
Last season’s 10th-place La Liga team, coached by Michel, opened the season with a draw at Real Sociedad, an outstanding performance in and of itself, before going on to defeat Getafe, Sevilla, Las Palmas, Granada, Mallorca, and Villarreal.
It will be interesting to see how they fare against Real Madrid in Saturday’s enticing encounter at Estadi Montilivi, which is on paper the season’s most difficult matchups (against Real Sociedad and Villarreal), both of which they won.
After losing to rivals Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby on Sunday, Real Madrid bounced back with a 2-0 victory against Las Palmas on Wednesday.
With goals from Brahim Diaz in the final minutes of the first half and Joselu in the opening minutes of the second, Carlo Ancelotti’s team cruised to their sixth league victory of the season.
Real Madrid is now in second place with a 6-1 record after seven matches, but they would fall to third place if Barcelona were to avoid defeat against Sevilla on Friday night.
Aside from the Madrid derby, Ancelotti’s squad has been effective in 2023-24, including a 1-0 win over Union Berlin in the Champions League group stage opener on September 20. After playing in Girona, Los Blancos will return to European action by traveling to Italy early next week to get ready for Tuesday’s match against Napoli.
