Game Preview

The Atlanta Braves are the finest team in baseball, and they continued their dominance on Monday night. The first game of a three-game series ended with the Atlanta Braves winning 14-4 on the road against the Colorado Rockies. The Braves have now won seven in a row over Colorado, and they’ll go for number eight on Tuesday night in Denver.

The Braves took game one of the series with a combination of strong hitting, fast baserunning, and good timing. On Monday, the Rockies felt the crushing blow that has become all too common for them.

The Rockies’ young lineup got even younger over the weekend when 23-year-old Hunter Goodman was promoted from the minors. On Sunday, he debuted with the Baltimore Orioles in the MLB, where he went 2-for-4 and made a game-ending diving catch of a line drive. With two additional hits on Monday, Goodman proved his previous success was no fluke.

But good pitching is also essential for Colorado to win, not only energized young players. After having Tommy John surgery in 2020, Peter Lambert has made his way back to the Rockies’ starting rotation. The right-hander, who started the season in the bullpen and appeared in 14 games, will make his ninth consecutive start on Tuesday.

At a single career appearance against the Braves, he pitched two innings of shutout relief. While Colorado is utilizing the remainder of this season to lay the groundwork for future success, Atlanta is making the most of the current one. As the defending World Series champions, the 2021 Atlanta Braves are currently in first place of the NL East Division and have the advantage of playing their first round of playoff games at home.

The Braves have won this season in a variety of ways, but Monday’s game introduced a new dimension. In the seventh inning, Ronald Acuna Jr., who had four hits, a home run, and two stolen bases, had to contend with excessively excited spectators.

As a 16-year veteran, Charlie Morton has faced the Rockies many times. In 13 career starts versus them, he is 5-2 with a 3.99 ERA and 3-1 with a 5.35 ERA in seven games played at Coors Field.
