On Wednesday night, Kauffman Stadium will host Game 2 of the Kansas City Royals‘ midweek series against the Seattle Mariners. After a pair of draws, this game will decide which team heads into the weekend with a series victory.
The Royals would love nothing more than to play spoiler for the AL Wild Card while the Mariners are fighting for their playoff lives. Since last season, the Royals have won three of the last five matchups, so there’s no reason to think they can’t pull off the upset here.
The Mariners’ triumph in extra innings on Tuesday night allowed them to keep climbing the AL Wild Card standings. They have closed the gap to within two games of the second Wild Card berth by going 7-3 over their previous ten games. Although the AL West looks out of reach, a strong few weeks could propel them to the top of the Wild Card standings.
One explanation for Seattle’s recent troubles is that their offensive has regressed slightly this season. Even though they score fewer than five runs a game on average, they have shown the ability to do so on occasions like Tuesday, and they will be trying to capitalize on a depleted Kansas City rotation and bullpen.
Despite the fact that the Royals’ season was doomed before it ever began, they will keep trying to cause upsets in the remaining games. They have not only one of the poorest records in the AL, but also one of the worst in baseball. Although they were victorious on Monday, their current record of 3-7 over their previous 10 contests does not bode well for their chances of future success.
The Mariners are in good shape to pick up an important road win on Wednesday. Their offense is clicking again, and they can count on one of their best arms in Luis Castillo. The Royals don’t have the pitching staff to go through this game in the midst of a series, and they also don’t have the batting depth or focus to keep up in the late going.
