The Atlanta Braves have been on an unbelievable tear, seemingly dominating the National League East with a 20-3 record in their last 23 games and seem likely to take away that division crown this season. Meanwhile, the Chicago White Sox are mired in an extended losing streak, going 2-6 in their last 8 games. On Friday July 14th in the first of three games at Truist Park, Atlanta will meet Chicago for their three-game series. Atlanta’s Charlie Morton will begin against Chicago’s Michael Kopech.
In the NL East, the Braves top the Miami Marlins by an 8.5 game margin. Both at home (30-15) and on the road (30-14), their performances are similarly formidable. On paper, this appears to be a David against Goliath battle. They managed to reach 60 victories in the year prior to the All-Star break, making them the first club in the MLB to do it. They went 12-3 in their final 15 matches to finish the first part. In their matchup with a failing White Sox group, they have an opportunity to increase their total.
For Atlanta in the opening match of the series, Morton will start. The seasoned righty has prevailed in 4 straight starts and limited the Rays to just a single run on 4 hits in his most recent outing. He has limited 7 out of his previous 8 adversaries to 3 runs or fewer.
White Sox fans know they have experienced an upsetting season so far and enter this game looking to stay away from finishing last in the AL Central. While that is unsurprising news, hopefully they can still find ways to improve over the second half. At times, though, this will prove challenging: injuries have beset the team, necessitating some difficult decisions at the trade deadline. Pitching staff performance could pose particular difficulties going forward.
