By winning the first two games of their three-game series against the inferior Oakland Athletics, the Chicago Cubs have maintained their strong start to the season. In today’s series finale, they’ll try to complete the sweep.
In game one, the Cubs’ offense really got going. The Cubs’ batsmen had seven multi-hit games. However, Cody Bellinger and Patrick Wisdom were the stars of the show. Bellinger recorded his first five-hit performance in a game, and Wisdom slugged two home runs in the 10-1 victory.
Nico Hoerner scored three runs and added his tenth stolen base to Ian Happ’s three RBI on the night. After pitching seven innings and allowing one run on five hits, Hayden Wesneski was awarded the victory.
The second game was a little tighter, but the Athletics’ hitters were unable to get going. In his six innings of pitching, Marcus Stroman was outstanding. Only two hits were given up by Stroman, who had five strikeouts.
The Cubs bullpen shut out the Athletics 4-0 by not allowing a hit in the final three innings. Seiya Suzuki scored two times that evening. Cody Bellinger, Nick Madrigal, and Yan Gomes all recorded RBIs.

The middle of the lineup has produced exceptionally well offensively for the Cubs. In addition to Suzuki’s five hits, Bellinger’s six hits, Happ’s three hits, and Hoerner’s two hits apiece, Wisdom has homered in four of the last five games. Although Dansby Swanson has struggled a bit this series, he has been the top hitter for the Cubs all year.
Mason Miller is the real deal for the Athletics. Although he won’t be playing until next Wednesday, he has tremendous potential. Given their poor run production, Oakland shouldn’t anticipate scoring many goals. Their pitching is what they must rely on.
Miller has just 11 career games pitched in the minor leagues. But in 28 and a third innings, he struck out 53 batters. Miller is best when he is in command. He has only walked six batters in those innings. With his stuff, Miller will assault and defeat hitters. The Athletics can win this game if he has a strong debut.
