On Tuesday, the Guardians defeated the Reds by a score of 3-0. They’ve decided to try for a clean sweep today. The Guardians got off to a great start, scoring two runs on a single to left field by Kole Calhoun. In the seventh inning, Steven Kwan singled to left field to score three runs for the Guardians.
Logan Allen allowed only four hits and struck out seven in six scoreless innings, so the Guardians had no need for any extra pitching help. Then, in the seventh inning, reliever Enyel De Los Santos struck out the whole lineup.
Trevor Stephen held the opposing team scoreless in the eighth. Emmanuel Chase then finished things off in the ninth inning. For the Reds, Graham Ashcraft threw a solid seven innings, giving three earned runs on seven hits and striking out two, but ultimately taking the loss.
The Reds had a few good scoring opportunities. They were unable to make the most of the situation. Kevin Newmar’s first-inning single gave the Reds an early advantage. But they were unable to advance because of a Matt McLain fly out, an Elly De La Cruz strikeout, and a Spencer Steer groundout to shortstop. In the bottom of the sixth, the Reds had two runners on base and no outs. Unfortunately, Steer grounded out to second base, and Henry Ramos struck out looking.
Today, Noah Syndergaard, who is 2-5 with a 6.35 ERA, will get the ball for the Guardians. Recently, he started and won his first game with the Guardians against the Toronto Blue Jays by going 5 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out five.
The Blue Jays will be starting Andrew Abbott, who has a 7-3 record and a 2.95 ERA. In his last start, a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, he lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowed two earned runs on four hits, and struck out nine batters.
