The New York Yankees’ season comes to a close against the Kansas City Royals, and they’re headed there after dropping the series finale in Toronto. If they lose any of these three games, the Yankees will finish with their lowest 162-game record since they went 76-86 in 1992.
The Yankees’ 81-78 record is impressive considering they were last in the American League East in September with a sub.500 record. They finished the month with a 16-9 record, good for second place in the AL behind only the 17-9 Baltimore Orioles.
The Mets will send out lefty Carlos Rodon to face the Royals in the series opener. Rodon is 3-5 with a 3.95 ERA in 10 career starts versus the Royals, all while playing for the Chicago White Sox.
Rodon has now lost his last two outings. After allowing three runs in six and a third innings in a 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh on September 17, he gave up five runs in six and a third innings in a 7-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. In the latter game, he fanned 10 Pirates.
The Royals now sit at 54-105 and need two victories this weekend to avoid setting a new franchise record for futility (56-106 set in 2005).
For the Royals, right-hander Jordan Lyles (5-17, 6.24 ERA) will take the mound. Lyles is 3-3 with a 4.38 ERA in nine career games (eight starts) versus the Yankees. On July 23 at Yankee Stadium, in his lone start against New York this season, he allowed home runs to Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo, contributing to a loss by a score of 8-5. Lyles gave up five runs in five innings of work.
On May 23, 2022, Aaron Judge went deep twice against Lyles. Judge is 6-for-8 with four home runs and five RBIs in his last three games against Lyles.
Lyles has the worst ERA in the majors and is tied for third in home runs allowed with 38 this season. He led the league in home runs allowed in 2021. He ended a skid of nine consecutive starts in which he allowed at least one home run by winning his most recent start on Saturday by pitching five scoreless innings at Houston.
