Legendary figures George Brett and Reggie Jackson won’t grace the field, but both teams could use their iconic presence at this moment. Despite currently residing at the bottom of the standings, both teams are eager for a brighter future as they clash at Yankee Stadium. The game is set for Friday at 7:05 p.m. EDT, and the passionate Bleacher Creatures will be in full force, supporting the players regardless of their team allegiance.
The Royals’ pitching has not fared much better this season, boasting one of MLB’s weakest staffs, encompassing both the rotation and bullpen. In addition, they have already traded away reliever Aroldis Chapman. Rookie Alec Marsh will take the mound in this game, seeking to prove his long-term value to the club. While he endured a rough debut on June 30, he has shown improvement in July, allowing five runs (four earned) in 11.0 innings. The issue of home runs looms for him, especially at Yankee Stadium with its short porch, so he needs to exercise caution. If he can replicate the strong performance from his last outing, it will help mitigate potential damage.
The Yankees have been feeling the absence of Aaron Judge, and their lineup has suffered in his stead. Since June 4, the first game without Judge, they rank 28th in runs per game. Despite ranking fifth in home runs, their low on-base percentage (26th) and batting average (28th) have led to most of their home runs being solo shots. While Gleyber Torres has been performing well this month, Anthony Rizzo has struggled since June started, and the rest of the lineup has been inconsistent.
Pitching has been the saving grace for the Yankees, but they are starting to feel the pressure, particularly their relievers. Despite boasting a league-leading ERA this season, their bullpen has struggled this month, rivaling the worst in the league. Starting pitching has been inconsistent outside of Gerrit Cole, although Clarke Schmidt has shown improvement recently.
