Pirates Analysis: Only lost once in the season
Before returning to Pittsburgh for their home opener, the Pirates will play the last game of their 3-game series and the last game of their road trip. They have started out really well. For the first time since 1983, the Pirates started 5-0 and won each of their first five matches of the season. For this one, the Pirates will send Martin Perez on the mound. He had a 2.08 ERA and a 0-0 record going into the contest. He pitched just 4 1/3 innings in his last appearance, giving up one earned run on six hits, walking three, and striking out two. He’s never played against the Nationals before.
Nationals Analysis: Coming off a tough 8-4 loss
After a dismal start to the season, the Nationals want to turn things around. Thus, in the last game of this 3-game set against the Pirates, they must figure out how to score runs and stop any from being scored. Josiah Gray will be the Nationals’ next option. His ERA is 15.75 and he has a 0-1 record going into this game. Unfortunately, he struggled in his last appearance against the Cincinnati Reds, giving up 7 earned runs on 8 hits in only 4 innings pitched while also walking two and striking out six. His two biggest errors occurred on pitches that were too good to miss and both of them were long enough to be home runs. The Nationals must figure out how to enter the base and then drive them in. Regretfully, they haven’t done this very consistently.
