The Cincinnati Reds and the Atlanta Braves will square off in a match-up that could go either way, when they meet up Friday June 23rd at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. Both clubs are on hot streaks offensively and have recorded impressive offensive totals during those streaks.
The Reds have won 11 straight games and taken over the NL East Division with their hot hitting. Top prospect Elly De La Cruz’s addition has further strengthened this lineup which already boasts some of the finest young talent in MLB. In fact, this marks only the third time ever that any MLB team has achieved such an amazing feat; 1957 and 1939 teams held records with 13 consecutive wins to start their seasons. The Reds, who were firmly in the midst of their streak when Joey Votto rejoined the lineup for the initial time this year, received a welcome boost from Votto’s inclusion.
Luke Weaver, a righty, starts for the Reds on the mound. Weaver has had a difficult start to the campaign, sporting an ERA of 6.47, but he is striking out about one hitter per inning and has historically had a 4.91 ERA when facing the Braves.
Atlanta has also been on an incredible tear, winning eight straight to reach 48-26 and take first place in the National League. This incredible turnaround marks an astounding change for a team that had struggled badly last year after trading away its star players to free up cash. The Atlanta Braves, who have the goal of winning their second World Series in the past three years, have had an incredible season so far.
The Braves’ rookie pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver will play in this game. Smith-Shawver has performed admirably in his initial three Major League outings, recording an ERA of 2.03 and a WHIP of 0.98 over his first 13.1 innings of professional baseball.
