Tuesday, August 1st at Minute Maid Park, the Cleveland Guardians and the Houston Astros will face off in Game 2 of a three-game series. With a 53–54 record, the Guardians have maintained their 2nd place position in the AL Central. With a record of 60-47, the Astros are now second in the AL West Division just half a game away from leaders Texas Rangers. Houston defeated the Guardians 7-3 on Monday evening after Jordan Alvarez launched a 3-run home run in the 6th inning that pulled Houston ahead.
The Guardians made news on Monday when they sent pitcher Aaron Civale over to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Kyle Manzardo, a minor-league batting talent. Despite a strong start by rookie starter Noah Syndergaard, Cleveland lost 7-3 in the first game of the set on Monday in Houston. Nevertheless, “Thor” only gave up one earned run across 5 1/3 innings before getting struck in his leg from a comebacker and had to exit the contest.
Gavin Williams, a rookie right-hander for the Guardians, will get the start in this game after pitching 4 innings versus the Kansas City Royals without allowing a run on 3 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.
On Monday, the Astros trailed 2-0 but rallied to score 7 runs in a row until the Guardians pathetically responded with a single run during the top of the ninth inning. After Syndergaard left the game in the sixth inning, Yordano Alvarez delivered the decisive punch by hitting a three-run home run off of Eli Morgan.
The Astros’ southpaw star Framber Valdez will take the mound for them. He already lost to the Texas Rangers after pitching 3.2 innings and giving up 6 runs on 8 hits while also walking 2 batters and striking out one.
