On Monday, Oakland native and Seattle Mariners starting right-hander Bryan Woo will lead his team into the first game in a three-game series against the Athletics, where he will be greeted by family and friends.
The Mariners will take one last break during their trip to California. The Mariners are one game behind the Texas Rangers and one and a half games behind the Toronto Blue Jays as the regular season’s final two weeks begin.
After being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-game series, the Mariners will look to Woo to help them get back on track. In June, the 23-year-old made his debut with the major league club.
Two of Woo’s last three outings have been shutouts, including a 7-0 home win on August 28 in which he allowed only three hits to the A’s across six innings. He just pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels at home, improving his record to 2-0.
Since winning two of three against the Athletics in Seattle from August 28-30, the Mariners have won only one series, at home last week against the Angels. Perhaps a hot pitcher is just what the doctor ordered.
The A’s will be facing the Mariners again, but this time it will be as the team that made former Mariners manager Bob Melvin look great in his first season back in Oakland after departing for the Padres in 2021. The Padres won the series in three games by a combined score of 23-6.
Left-hander JP Sears will make the first start and has gone 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA in three April appearances. Sears has allowed just one run on seven hits across 11 innings in two prior starts this season against the Mariners, but he has come away with no wins or losses to show for his efforts. In his two years as a professional, he has faced the Mariners five times and has gone 2-0 with a 0.67 ERA against them.
