In the series finale on Wednesday against the visiting Detroit Tigers, Freddie Freeman will lead the Los Angeles Dodgers in pursuit of more round numbers and a bit of big league history.
After beating the Tigers 3-2 on Tuesday thanks to an RBI single by Max Muncy in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Dodgers have a chance to sweep the three-game series. The Los Angeles Lakers have won five straight matches.
Freeman is the first first baseman in Dodgers history to blast 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season. Freeman is two hits away from reaching 200 for the first time in his career after collecting two against the Tigers on Tuesday. There has never been a season in which a first baseman has 20 home runs, 20 steals, and 200 hits in the major leagues.
Freeman is closing in on 60 doubles, as he hit his 56th on Tuesday. Both Charlie Gehringer and Joe Medwick in 1936 were the last players to hit 60 doubles in a season.
Rookie right-hander Bobby Miller will make his major league debut for the Dodgers on Wednesday against the Tigers, and he’ll be hoping to capitalize on Freeman’s run production.
Tigers right-hander Reese Olson will make his 20th appearance and 17th start in his debut season. It will be his first time going up against the Dodgers.
Olson has taken a no-hitter into the sixth inning in each of his last two appearances, and despite his 2-2 record over his last four starts, his 1.50 ERA in those 24 innings is impressive. Olson allowed just one run over six innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, and he shut out the Chicago White Sox over seven innings on September 2.
Tigers’ Spencer Torkelson and Parker Meadows went deep on Tuesday, but the team’s closer, Alex Lange, blew his second save in as many chances. With a single, Miguel Cabrera of Detroit surpassed Adrian Beltre and into 16th place on the all-time hits list, with 3,167.
