Today, two National League Central foes kick off an extended five-game series when the St. Louis Cardinals take a trip to Wrigley Field where they’ll face the Chicago Cubs. St Louis leads the division by five games at 69-51 after rolling to a three-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers capped off by a 6-4 win. Chicago took 2 out of 3 from the Milwaukee Brewers, missing out on a sweep with a 5-2 loss on Sunday.
The Cardinals have not only taken control of the NL Central but are starting to look like a threat to go far in the playoffs, and swept aside the Diamondbacks over the weekend. Ian Happ homered in the first before Seiya Suzuki went deep in the fourth, yet that was it for the offense and Milwaukee rallied with a combined five runs in the last three innings. Starter Justin Steele was outstanding with six scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits and a single walk while striking out 9.
Jordan Montgomery is making his 4th start in a Cardinals uniform today. He is currently holding a 6-3 record with a 3.29 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP over 131.1 innings pitched while striking out 114. The Cubs reply back with Drew Smyly, who is making his 17th start of the season. The 33-year-old lefty is carrying a 5-6 record with a 3.67 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP over 76 innings pitched while striking out 65.
