French Open Preview

Everything goes through one person on the women’s side of the French Open: Iga Swiatek.

There are name players throughout the draw but none have been able to defeat Swiatek recently. She is 9-0 on clay, winning at Rome and Stuttgart.

The 2020 French Open champion is on a 28-match winning streak. There is the possibility her journey to a title on the clay court could encounter two-time major runner-up Karolina Pliskova in a quarterfinal. Swiatek is looking to make the Round of 16 for the fourth straight time.

It is going to take far more than a major runnerup to derail Swiatek, the No. 1 seed.

Defending champion Babora Krejcikoa is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and that puts her on the other side of the draw, which could lead to a collision course with Swiatek in the final if both run the gauntlet of matches it takes to get there. Krejcikova has not played on clay this year and has a light match record of 9-4.

The French clay surface leads to upsets throughout the tournament and one match to watch early is former No. 1 Naomi Osaka meeting No. 27 seed Amand Anisimova, who is 10-3 on clay this year with quarterfinal appearances in Madrid and Rome, and a semifinal match at Charleston.

Other champions in the draw are 2018 winner Simona Halep, who is seeded 19th, and No. 13 Jelena Ostapenko, the 13th seed.

Halep is 19-6 overall in 2022 and 4-2 on clay. Her best finish this year on the surface was a quarterfinal spot at Madrid.

Ostapenko has yet to win on clay in two tries and is 14-8 overall, having lost her last five matches.

As you see, the only constant is Swiatek, who has dominated everyone during this incredible run and will be difficult to beat in Paris.
