Australian Open Men’s Final: Sinner & Medvedev 01/27/2024

Finals Preview

The match between Sinner J. and Medvedev D. takes place at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia on January 28 for the Australian Open Men’s Final.

In Melbourne, world number 4 Jannik Sinner ended the reigning champion Novak Djokovic’s 10-match winning streak in the semi-finals. Sinner took full advantage of the Serb’s shaky start and skillfully overcame losing the 3rd set to win in 4 sets. The 22-year-old has now defeated Djokovic in 3 of their previous 4 meetings to end their head-to-head record at 4-3, but his greatest accomplishment so far has been defeating Djokovic on Rod Laver Arena, the 10-time Australian Open champion’s favorite court in the world. After making it to his 1st Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon this past summer and winning important championships in Toronto, Beijing, and Vienna, Sinner is set to conclude an incredible 12-month journey on the circuit on Sunday.

In a 4-hour marathon encounter in his last game, world number 3 Daniil Medvedev stunned Alexander Zverev by coming back from a set down. After losing his 1st two Grand Slam finals in Melbourne in back-to-back seasons to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and Rafael Nadal in 2022, the 27-year-old is through to his 5th Grand Slam final of his career, all of which will take place on hardcourts. He is hopeful that this will be “3rd time lucky.” With a loss to Rafael Nadal in New York in his first Grand Slam final back in 2019, Medvedev defeated Djokovic in straight sets to win his sole major championship to date.

In their head-to-head match, Daniil Medvedev leads Sinner 6-3; however, it should be pointed out that Sinner has won their past 3 meetings since October, so he currently appears to be in the advantage. Medvedev has already acknowledged that he is exerting more effort than ever before to get to a major final
