Egypt and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will square off at Laurent Pokou Stadium in San Pedro City, Ivory Coast, on January 28 to play a knockout round match for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Egypt, the five-time AFCON Champions, had a difficult opening to the tournament after earning just three points from their group matches. They haven’t lost in their previous seven games, though, which demonstrates their tenacity and willpower. In addition, they have a strong head-to-head record versus their rivals, winning six of the eight meetings. Egypt’s depth of expertise in this esteemed competition may play a major role in determining their future success. The Egyptians have tied all 3 of their group matches, and this weekend presents yet another difficult test for them because star player Mohamed Salah is still sidelined. Trezeguet, a midfielder for Trabzonspor, is vying for a starting role after scoring in a 1-1 tie with Cape Verde as a replacement.
Conversely, DR Congo, has so far displayed a lackluster performance at the AFCON. With just three points from their three group games, they advanced from Group F to the 1/16 round. In light of their position as a collective wildcard, it’s reasonable to argue that they have outperformed expectations. DR Congo is losing versus Egypt in head-to-head matches; they have only triumphed once against them. But the information provided by statistics about potential outcomes on the field is limited. And underestimating DR Congo will be foolish given their enthusiastic AFCON exploits thus far. In order to arrange a meeting with Egypt, they divided the spoils with nations like Tanzania, Morocco, and Zambia in Group F. Gael Kakuta, a midfielder for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, hobbled off during the last group match due to an injury; Omenuke Mfulu is expected to start in his place. Cedric Bakambu, the standout player for Galatasaray, is also vying for a start.
