South Africa and Morocco will be facing off at Laurent Pokou Stadium on January 30, in a knockout round match for the Africa Cup of Nations.
On the last day of Group F fixtures, Morocco defeated Zambia 1-0 to take the lead in the group with two wins and a tie. One of the pre-tournament favorites, did enough to win the group despite not exactly lighting up their group. Now, they will want to build on that performance in the knockout stage. Despite dominating the first part of their last match, Morocco was unable to capitalize on the opportunities they produced. However, in the 38th minute, captain Ziyech snapped the deadlock when he pounced on a stray ball that had bounced off the goalkeeper. After their captain was substituted at halftime, they appeared less deadly in the attacking 3rd, but they still maintained their domination in the 2nd quarter. Near the end of the game, they had a chance to extend their lead, but Tresford Lawrence Mulenga made two outstanding saves to keep them out.
In this AFCON, South Africa has not given off a convincing impression. They defeated Namibia 3-0 in their 2nd group game to show that they had recovered from their first defeat to Mali. Despite the fact that their group match versus Tunisia ended in a draw, their flat tires secured them a spot in the round of 16. They face the best squad in Africa, so they have their job cut out for them. Before the 34th Africa Cup of Nations began, head coach Broos had promised to assist South Africa in advancing past the group stage. The Belgian performed admirably through the group stage as South Africa advanced to the Round of 16 of the Afcon. South Africa will have to bring their best performance to get a result out of Morocco.
