Leicester City and Birmingham City will square off at the King Power Stadium on January 27 for the FA Cup.
Their FA Cup triumph in the final round could be comparable, but their season-long performances are very different. With a 7-point lead over Ipswich Town in 2nd place, Leicester leads the Championship with ease after an incredible start to the season. They have won 21 league games, which is 4 more than their subsequent best record in the division. They have also defeated their opponents in the league, winning 3-2 at St. Andrews back in December. Enzo Maresca, the former coach of Manchester City, has done a fantastic job leading the Foxes, who appear headed for a prompt Premier League return. Over a long period of time, Leicester lost 4 FA Cup Finals before winning the competition for the first time in May 2021. Leicester head coach Enzo Maresca will be incapable of relying upon the assistance of Cesare Casadei, who was recently summoned by parent team Chelsea.
On the other hand, Birmingham City’s season has been somewhat chaotic. The twice-beaten FA Cup finalists have had difficulty in the league and have already appointed a 4th manager for the current campaign. After John Eustace was dismissed in October, Wayne Rooney was brought in for a disastrous 3 months. Following Rooney’s dismissal, Steve Spooner led the team as interim manager for one match before Tony Mowbray took over earlier this month. They have taken 2 and lost 1 under Mowbray, but they have only amassed 11 points on the road, which ranks them as the 4th worst away team in the Championship. To expect the visitors to gain much from their cross-midlands journey to Leicester surely seems like an ambitious goal. Nevertheless Birmingham could take this game away if Leicester takes the match for granted.
