The San Antonio Spurs will head up the coast to take on the Sacramento Kings on Thursday. The Spurs come into this game at just 6-9 but have played competitively thus far and have lived on an offensive-centric attack. The Kings are 7-6 on the season and quietly sit in second place in the Pacific Division as they continue to gel with a relatively new roster.
Just fifteen games into their 2022-23 season and the Spurs have proved one thing, they will not roll over and start counting their ping pong balls in anticipation of the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes. Coach Gregg Popovich correctly predicted that the Spurs would not be competing for an NBA title this season but they are certainly not playing like a team competing for the NBA’s next big thing.
The Spurs have lost seven of eight and are certainly playing with a clear talent-deficit in nearly every matchup but they have invariably competed night in and night out. After a clunker against the Warriors, losing by 37 at Golden State, the Spurs rebounded to play a tight contest against the Blazers on Tuesday night on the road.
On the other hand, the Sacramento Kings have been playing a chess match with their roster, trying to find the right combination of players to return to the winning ways that have escaped the franchise since the early 2000’s. They have put the controls in the hands of point guard Aaron Fox and have tried to surround him with a mix of veterans and youngsters that can play a similar style to their speedy point guard.
Mike Brown has seemingly instilled a new attitude for the Kings this season after the team struggled through much of last season before firing their coach and then making a major trade to shake things up. Now, the Kings have the pieces they want and the coach they want to make things happen.
