For the 2023 Continental Tire Seattle Tip-off on Friday, the 5th ranked Connecticut Huskies and the 10th ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs, two schools in the AP Top 10, will square off.
Currently in his 25th year in a storied coaching career, Mark Few has a 697-137 record while leading the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The coach wants to rebuild the Bulldogs’ identity in the wake of Drew Timme’s departure and his institution’s mark of 2307 points. Forwards Graham Ike along with Anton Watson are the first to establish that sense of self in the paint. Gonzaga has won seven of its initial eight matches this season. The Bulldogs defeated Yale, Eastern Oregon, Syracuse, UCLA, CSU Bakersfield, USC, and AR-Pine Bluff before falling to Washington 78-73, aside from a defeat to Purdue. Gonzaga got outrebounded 36 to 28 during the loss. In their most recent game, the Bulldogs faced MS Valley State and were able to return to the victory sheet. Gonzaga scored 40 more points throughout the second half after scoring 38 in the first, leading to a 78-40 victory. Leading the squad from the bench via 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals was Braden Huff.
In his sixth season as head coach at UCONN, Dan Hurley has guided the team to the NCAA tourney the past three years. The Huskies moved up to the current #5 ranking in the polls after starting their campaign ranked 12th. It had been more than a year since their last defeat to a non-conference foe, which came against Kansas on December 1st. As of December 1, the Huskies’ only loss on the season was a 69-65 setback over Kansas. Apart from that, this season, UConn has defeated Northern Arizona, Stonehill, MS Valley State, Indiana, Texas, Manhattan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and AR-Pine Bluff by resounding scores. This past Saturday, the Huskies faced AR-Pine Bluff, and they didn’t have many problems. UConn won 101-63, scoring 45 points during the initial half and 56 more after that. Alex Karaban led the squad in scoring with 7 boards and 26 points. In the triumph, Tristen Newton scored 16 points and dished out 6 assists.
